Brief History
The Twin Town of San Ignacio and Santa Elena began as logging ‘Baccadier’ in the mid 1880’s. as a prominent logging post and the heart of the chicerlo industry, workers and their families populated the area swiftly and it continued to grow over time. With this growth, Father Andrew Bavastro S. J., a Catholic priest, named the area “San Ignacio” in 1870. However, it was not until 1881 that the Cayo District was formally established and San Ignacio was named the Capitol of the district.
Edgar Alexander August was appointed for the first ‘Alcalde’ or Mayor of the village of San Ignacio on 10th August, 1887. The San Ignacio and Santa Elena Town Council was officially formed on October 19th, 1904 by the Government of the British Honduras. Hector Silva was appointed as the first mayor of the newly established municipality.
